These shapes unfolded into a variety of different cut outs. We were then instructed to draw on each of the cut outs, be it on one or on several and told to create an image. Overall this was a strange task but I did enjoy the experimentation.
For the most part I chose to work in pen as I felt with all the twigs and plants in all the views that lines would be the best option to go with. One positive of this was it did create some unique compositions and tones. One downside though is that some of the images fell a bit flat when tone was line and twigs were lines and generally speaking it became and entanglement of lines. Although another positive is that it is all a big learning curve!
For this lecture we looked at drawing for again and to try get a whole form. I felt that comparing this work to how my work from when I started the year was a good way to look at it and I found that I have actually improved. As well as that I am quite happy with how my views on tone and lighting have worked out. One thing I think I would liked to have done is another extra drawing which I was allowed to spend a longer period of time on. maybe an hour or so? That is always something I am able to work on in future in my own time.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06895747924770114646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8485450226046369403.post-72539698889845116022017-04-24T05:54:00.002-07:002017-04-24T05:54:19.528-07:00Semester 2 : Week 6 (And Homework)For the movement images I found myself struggling. Normally I wouldn't particularly struggle with creating an initial image. However this time I found myself confused about when to try capture an image and also about remembering what the actual form looked like. With more practice I actually learnt how to create a quick sketch which is seen more in my homework that I produced. Overall this is definitely something I disliked but I still need to improve my skills with this method.
Due to a sickness I was unable to attend the actual lecture for this week. However I still looked through all the work and decided I'd give it a go in the form of the homework. Overall I feel this was actually quite successful and enjoyed using the pen to create the images. The only downside is that I have less images and so practice for this part, However I do have experience with perspective drawing which I feel relates to these sort of images alot.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06895747924770114646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8485450226046369403.post-50776293490174272232017-04-24T05:34:00.000-07:002017-04-24T05:34:54.107-07:00Semester 2 : Week 4 Homework

For this homework I decided to invert the colour ideas and draw instead of the normal 'cut out and stick down' of basic shapes. The only downside for this is the outcome wasn't quite what I expected. I was hoping for more of a bold composition however instead it seems to fall a bit flat. For future though I think this could be adjusted with more lines being added via pen for extra bits of tone.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06895747924770114646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8485450226046369403.post-22631694116651756992017-04-24T05:31:00.000-07:002017-04-24T05:31:28.450-07:00Semester 2 : Week 4

This weeks project was different. Personally I found it interesting to look at all the different objects to draw. On top of this the fact that you had so much to draw meant that you had to work quick in capturing basic shapes. On top of that the cutting out shapes and creating images based on this also meant that I got to experiment with new techniques still. One positive outcome was the owl. I found it so impressive that I decided to edit it in Photoshop and in doing so add a bit of colour variety. I feel this works well as it adds a sense of atmosphere to the image and the lighter areas show off the lighting in the area as well.
One of the issues however is that some of the colours are hard to make stand out or mix to the right sort of shade. I used the same area for all my drawings as the area itself has the nicest change in lighting and shades of colours. If I had more time for this project id look to improve it by going back and using a pen instead of charcoal in an attempt to create tone using lines.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06895747924770114646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8485450226046369403.post-22284236230978433852017-04-24T05:15:00.004-07:002017-04-24T05:15:37.141-07:00Semester 2 : Week 3
For this lecture we looked at drawing the model next to a skeleton which was also positioned differently for each shot. Personally I enjoyed this task as it allowed me to practice more with charcoal while at the same time taught me about using wax and ink. It did take me a while to get used to the combination however once I got the hang of it I managed to produce the skull image. I think this could be made better in future with more attempts at the process.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06895747924770114646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8485450226046369403.post-52540379875613518792017-04-24T05:06:00.001-07:002017-04-24T05:06:07.355-07:00Semester 2 : Week 2 HomeworkFor the homework we were meant to do several sketches in time periods. However I mixed two around and did my friend sketch in the 45 minute slot instead. Originally at the time I was only looking to do it in the slotted time but I ended up getting more and more into the image itself so it dragged over slightly. After I had completed it I decided it could still have more developed into it and as of such I put it into Photoshop and changed a few colour variations. This was quite successful as now the image has tone and variety in terms of colour.
For the first drawing week back from university I felt that I had actually performed better than expected. Some of the images work better than others for obvious reasons but I feel that the bold composition on a few has helped the image overall. The best to show this in my opinion is the white side view on the black drop as it clearly shows the form of the head and even stands out compared to the background.
One way I could improve for future however is to practice with the pens and pencils more.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06895747924770114646noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8485450226046369403.post-87240009019069514022017-04-23T08:34:00.003-07:002017-04-23T08:34:27.806-07:00Semester 2 Learning report At the beginning of this semester I had initially thought that the workings I had been producing would have stayed the same and my abilities would continue to improve in their respective fields.
For the most part this is true, However instead of developing with media I was accustomed to using I decided to practice and experiment with other forms such as pens, paints and in some cases adjusting drawings digitally to allow them to expand further.

In terms of my sketch work and images of the life drawing model I feel that I have slightly improved in terms of my ability with charcoal. At the same time I found myself shying away from my normal points of perspective and started to look from different angles to try and get a fresh new image to try create.
Some I found more challenging than others, such as the series of pen drawings which are created from a low perspective looking up at the model. From my initial first look at the drawings it looked as if her features were rather distorted and moved from where they normally would be. One positive point about this was that because the initial image looked wrong it made me work back into it to try correct my mistakes with one such way being to add tone to the face and showing a direction that the light was coming from all while using a pen, a form of media I am not used to using.
I felt this was my first real success with using pen to create tone using lines and working over what I had already drawn out to create a bolder appearing image. Because of this it made me want to work in pen more.

Over the following weeks I did start to drift back to the comfort of charcoal however when it came time to do the river walk I decided that it was due time to pick the pen up again and try to experiment with capturing a large image with alot of detail.
Some of these were quite successful with the majority of the image being captured successfully and having a deal of detail contained to show what was going on in the environment around my sketches and not just focusing on a small single area and making it highly detailed. I feel the successes were caused because of my reworking into images regardless of if there was an error and in turn made the images seem alot broader in tone and in depth in some cases.
However just as reworking led to some success in a couple of my workings it also led to some becoming a bit flat and messy causing the actual image itself to become lost. One way I could have possibly recovered the image was to add more tone although one issue with adding more lines to a line drawing is that you run the risk of losing the image even more than when you started.
For future I will begin to use my pen in different ways to create tonal value and leave the image still clearly visible as a whole.

One artist who's work I looked at was Alberto Giacometti who primarily is a sculptor but also does quite messy sketches with pens and pencils. ("Alberto G I A C O M E T T I ") When looking at his work the first thing I noticed was that the image itself looks messy and similar to a mass of scribbles on a page but the more I looked the more I realized that he had captured the form of a mans head with details such as eyes, nose, mouth and ears all visible to see under the mass of lines. The lines in his images also give a brief sense of tone and depth to the person that he has drawn. The reason I chose this is because I feel like his style and workings would be a great direction for my to take my own images in purely because of how you can still see the core image yet at the same time it has its own style which distracts the viewer from what the image actually is.

After having been working on my pen skills more I also looked at how I used a pencil for a few of my homework's and sketches during the lectures. Normally pencil is the first form of media I would go to for creating any of my workings although for the last year I had put it off in favor of charcoal. When going back to the pencil I had found that I was struggling to try and create tone in a few of my images as its not something that can be smudged to add massive areas of detail and tone so like my pen drawings I had to create tone using lines and shading for the most.
One image I felt that I had really succeeded with was the part of my homework sketch from during the first couple of weeks. Originally I was meant to spend only 20 minutes on the sketch itself however I found myself getting more and more involved with it, developing tone and adding extra lines to really make the image stand out. Over time I began to realise that I had been adding more and more detail to certain areas which had caused other areas to need developing. This was a good thing though as it made me really observe the source image that I was sketching from and meant that I was looking for tone differences in all aspects of the image.
When I had completed this sketch I was actually quite proud of my own workings for once but felt that it could still be worked on further.
Using my own sense of style and skill set I decided to bring the image into Photoshop and experiment around with a few different colour techniques and tone variations.
This drastically changed my views of how the image had developed as suddenly dark sections were bursting with colour but kept tonal values and it proved that even a black and white image can be brought out with small adjustments and be made to stand out stronger than it had before.

Because of the success that I had had with this image I decided to try and edit another piece of work that I had created during a drawing class. During one of our lessons we had looked at creating a collage of sorts and then cutting out or creating new shapes to make the scene we saw in front of us, As if sketching with paper and scissors. While I found the overall image to be a bit disappointing I did thing that the owl I had made was interesting in both form and pattern. The outline of the owl was clearly visible as well as the branch it was perched on to give it a bit of context and on top of that the way the paint had moved across the cutout had given the owl some tone and dramatic lighting to really show off its shape.
When I had noticed this I had decided it was too good an opportunity to miss so like my sketch work I put it into Photoshop and just had a brief experiment with backgrounds, tone and colour variations to try create a set piece.

This was another success in my mind as after I had created the simple look it had given a whole new appearance and atmosphere to the original cutout. One thing I would change though is the style of how I created the edited image and try to look at more of a 'pop art' style like the workings of Andy Warhol who did many images in pop art form ("Andy Warhol Art"). Another reason for me wanting to make my own work more like his is the variation of bright colours compared to the normal bland ones that most of my work has been produced in.

To conclude I feel like my work has taken a rather large change in style and development of my other skills. The last semester has proven that no matter how comfortable you get with a certain media that it can always be improved and that experimentation can lead to a new result that you never knew was actually possible and that expands on what the original image was.

This was particularly interesting as I had to be quick in capturing the image and didn't really have a great deal of time for my details to be added. Overall it made me think of how to quickly capture the image and key lines to capture.

One in particular I feel has improved is my ability with charcoal and chalk. These conflicting shades normally don't compliment each other as they stand out as much as possible however I've found that when trying to define light areas in my life drawing work, as well as mid tones and dark zones, that they are a great tool for trying to show tone as well as to quickly flesh out an image.
One particular artist I feel shows this is Douglas McDougall who recently travelling around Beijing using charcoal and graphite to create hyper realistic images that look almost exactly like photographs. * (Douglas McDougall — knight Webb gallery, 2016) In a lot of his specific workings we see that even though those are the main materials he uses to draw they are not the only ones to leave a mark on the page. The artist also uses items such as sandpaper, scalpels and erasers to create his other marks which can leave imprints to create the other textures that are seen on the images.
When comparing my own work to his however there are major differences. His workings for one involve more than just the drawing tools and not only that the amount of time and detail he pours into them is far beyond the time I put into mine. In comparing the technicality of our images though I would say we both aim to capture the mid, light and dark tones in the same ways. Another point to add is that with my images I am just attempting to capture a rough image whereas he is creating a hyper realistic image, essentially trying to pull the viewer into the world of his images, trying to get them to see his characters stories from the marks and stretches shown on the subjects face.
The second artist I chose to look at was Vincent Van Gogh as his paint work is full of bright colours, sometimes complimenting and sometimes conflicting. His work sprung to mind the second we began working with paints and using contrasting colours for dark and light tones, the effect of which made a mass of colours on our pages but still showed a very clear image. Van Gogh's own work is similar in that he doesn't see just a single colour in his work and then add tone, He adds other colours in to act as the tone instead. A good example of this is in 'Starry Night' *(Impact, 2002) where even though the images are exaggerated and we know its set in the night time you barely even see a slight use of black on this painting. The sky is filled with a mass of blue and green swirls from clouds floating past, the light from the stars and the moon pours out into the sky adding in blends of yellows and then finally the actual image of the landscape below is barely even noticed due to the mass of colour and shapes produced in the above section. In comparison to my own work I also used bright colours to cause the image to look exaggerated in terms of tonal value, similar to Van Gogh, however if any of my negative space were to look anything similar to his images I would paint for the rest of my life. Another good point to make when comparing my painted images and his is another artist entirely. Jenny Saville tends to use paint in a more realistic way to create images or portraits of people or models however she still does use a sense of exaggeration, expanding on her colour pallets from the normal pinks and pale colours to incorporate deeper colours and tones. This in itself also seems similar to Van Gogh in the sense that it uses a variation of colours and layers to change the tone of an image instead of relying on the same colour in a slightly different tone. A good example of this is her portraits. *(Gagosian, 2016)

For my next comparison I am going to be looking at Leonardo Da Vinci, Specifically for his pencil drawings, which I will then compare against my own. Da Vinci came from the Renaissance period in Italy, a time when artists exploded out into the world and masterpieces were coming from everywhere. Da Vinci is unique however in the sense that he didnt just do art he was also a mathematician, an engineer and many more. His more famous workings being the Mona Lisa painting and my own personal favorite his flying machine. His sketch work was mainly simple line drawings which somehow showed massive detail which is impressive considering the lack of real effort to blend in tone (for his engineering/ anatomical drawings that is). His Anatomical sketches show off that even though he is lacking a great deal of details and tones you can clearly see the defined shapes and appearances of the individuals giving a clear and crisp image *(Leonardo Da Vinci - the complete works, 2002). Most of my own pencil images drawn will attempt to show tone through shading in different grades of pencils which does vary from the line drawing style Da Vinci did tend to use.
In the future of my drawing work I would like to improve my own skill set and style to incorporate more of these workings in to give a clear and realistic image but at the same time to show a more technical visualization of the human body, to show clearly what moves and what sort of points have stress placed on them.

To conclude, My work will never be finished in terms of developing my style and techniques but if I can incorporate any of these skills or styles I've spoken about then I would be one step closer to being as good as I can be. I will look to do such improvements through practice and self motivated studies.

For my negative image homework I had very annoying results which began to bug me. Two of the drawings came out with awful scaling and features all over the place however the tone seemed to start working. As a sense of experimentation I thought to attempt making an image of one of my old pictures of me on a climbing wall. it started well and if I had practiced more I think I could have really turned it around but its not a bad stopping point to reflect on. My final full body negative image drawing is the best in terms of scale, placement of features and measurements however in terms of tone and movement the experimental photo seemed to be the best, with variations of mid tones as well as light and dark sections shown clearly.
In a change of pace I wanted to not use charcoal for any of my images as its a material I have the most practice with so I chose pencil instead. For obvious reasons I feel the image with the glass in hand is my most successful purely because of the way the fingers and hand warp on the other side of the glass looks quite nice, especially considering it still holds the lines of light and reflections in it too. I'm also happy with my other drawings and the simple lines I have used for the tone and detail. Simple yet successful!
Some of the exhibits date back quite far but even the display casing that some of these exhibits were in were a part of history themselves. Personally the animals on display were a little un-nerving however it was nothing compared to the dummies stood around with all the military equipment on. My best drawing was easily the Magpie, it seemed to call to me with the unique posing and structure of its body so I went straight for it with the charcoal and eraser. Again all of these skills im currently using could do with more practice over the holiday break.
My figure paintings are generally to scale and look correct in terms of measurement however there were a couple of issues with painting in a background and keeping up to speed with the rest of the group in the 10 minute intervals. In future my planning would need to be more well kept to as it cost me the completion of a couple of paintings. I think overall though this was quite successful. One way to improve this would be to practice in my spare time over the up coming holidays.
For the lesson this week we were working on mixing wet and dry materials. Most of my images are mainly focused on tone and varying light and dark areas. I tried a couple of ways to do this such as no real mid tones and just light and dark tones being heavily exaggerated, even in different colours to try add additional affects. My favorite for this is the complete red and blue chalk drawing as I feel the colours really help to not only show light and dark but to also show the heat and the cold areas, the blue really adds to the shadows and the lack of heat / light. whereas the red immediately shouts out that its a warm spot. Hopefully this success follows over into next weeks work!
This specific task was quite useful at getting me to look at the tonal values of the model differently as it meant that I had to really look and see what was going on and how it varied to other sections. I felt a couple of my drawings reflected my learning well whereas others were let down by my skills with foreshortening.

For the lesson this week we began to look at foreshortening and how to draw the body in different sizes depending on what angle we are looking from. I have had experience with this sort of drawing before so I knew what to expect however I did still find it a challenge to get some of the angles right causing me to have to go over certain areas again leaving my original markings behind. Some of these I left in as they add an additional affect to some of the images. Personally my best and favorite image is the one below in charcoal. This is due to the clean appearance of the image but at the same time the other lines that were used for planning this drawing seem to add an additional sense of shape or direction.
For the third week we were learning about correcting our mistakes, making sure our drawings were to scale and correct in composition.

This was a difficult session for me, not because I didn't understand what we were doing, or even that I couldn't see the model. It was because there were parts that even though I'd thought were correct were not of the right composition. Examples of these are where I've made some limbs longer or shorter than they should be. One way I started to take note of this though was with the space in between and making sure that the gaps lined up.

Another thing I found with this session was that even though I got annoyed with the fact that I didn't finish an image it started to make me think about how I lay out my work and images. Hopefully this continues to show in the future!
Yes its almost exactly the same as normal line drawing but its an attempt to get the viewer to try and look at all the gaps and surroundings of the item instead of the actual item itself. For this project I created 4 simple images as a practice run and then tried to add shading to the 5th in an attempt to add more detail to the simple looking bin. If this has succeeded or not is another thing however I do think its made me look at the spacing between objects more closely.

The first of the life drawing sessions went quite well. I completed 7 drawings, using different media, different styles and then with different time scales too. The one I enjoyed the most though was my opposite hand drawing (large top left). Because its not my normal drawing hand it made me have to use my pencil in a different way which in turn has made a new style of sweeping lines for me.

Overall I'm feeling that the work and sessions are going well and that soon it will be showing more in the work I'm producing.
My first attempt of a self portrait didn't work as well as it could have done. One thing I'd noticed was that the lower cheek comes out too far on the right. This is a good example of me needing to learn how to layout the structure of the face better.

Over all though its not a bad starting point. In future ill be doing more of these so after a haircut we will have to see how it goes!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06895747924770114646noreply@blogger.com0
